Don’t let allergies ruin your sleep.

A stuffy nose, itchy eyes, a tickly cough, or a tight chest — for those who suffer from allergies, getting a good night’s sleep can be quite a challenge. Especially in spring and summer, when pollen and dust mites are particularly active, your sleep can be significantly disrupted. Fortunately, there are effective tips and products to help keep allergens out of your bedroom. We’ve listed them for you.

1. Choose a hypoallergenic mattress or washable cover

Not every mattress is suitable for those sensitive to allergies. That’s why it’s important to choose a mattress with a hypoallergenic, easily removable cover. This way, you can regularly wash the cover at 60 degrees — the optimal temperature for effectively eliminating dust mites.

Because removing and washing a mattress cover can be quite cumbersome, we often recommend using an additional mattress protector. Such a protector keeps your mattress clean, extends its lifespan, and is much easier to remove for washing. Moreover, there are mattress covers and protectors with active probiotics that naturally repel dust mites, helping to create a healthy, fresh sleeping environment.

2. Hypoallergenic duvet: synthetic or natural materials

A synthetic duvet is a practical option, as it’s easy to wash at home. However, synthetic duvets often lack that cosy, snug feeling.

A duvet made from natural hair is an excellent alternative! Alpaca or camel hair duvets are naturally hypoallergenic and dust mite resistant. Alpaca also offers excellent temperature regulation and feels wonderfully light and airy, helping you stay dry and comfortable throughout the night. This contributes to a fresh and hygienic duvet — a real win-win!

Keep in mind that these duvets often feel slightly heavier than, for example, a high-quality down duvet. But that extra weight can actually add to a sense of security and comfort while you sleep.

3. Choose breathable bedding!

For those sensitive to allergies, breathable bedding is an absolute must. Materials that naturally ventilate well help prevent dust and allergens from accumulating, creating a cleaner sleeping environment.

Linen is an excellent choice: it’s antibacterial, hypoallergenic, and thanks to its open fiber structure, less susceptible to dust mites. Percale cotton offers a crisp, fresh feel and, due to its tight weave, is durable and easy to wash at 60 degrees — perfect for removing allergens. Tencel is also highly recommended: this fiber is hypoallergenic, antibacterial, and feels wonderfully soft.

4. Ensure proper ventilation

Fresh air is essential for a healthy, allergy-friendly bedroom. Make sure to ventilate your room daily. However, try to do this when pollen levels are low — for example, after a heavy rain shower.

Also, leave your bed uncovered so your mattress and bedding can air out properly. This helps create a fresh sleeping environment where allergens have less chance to accumulate.

5. Opt for a minimalist, dust-free, and pet-free bedroom

Keep your bedroom as clean as possible by vacuuming thoroughly on a regular basis. Limit the use of textiles that attract dust, such as heavy curtains and carpets. And as adorable as they are: it’s best to keep your pets out of the bedroom to avoid hair and allergens.

A lush boudoir-style bedroom with lots of decor may look romantic, but it requires a lot of upkeep to stay dust-free. Don’t feel like dusting all the time? Then opt for a Marie Kondo-inspired bedroom: minimalist and tidy, with only the essentials for a fresh, healthy night’s sleep.
